Photo du Jour: Day 132

Crown Heights serenade:

I also tried out the video function on my camera for the first time. When compressed by Flickr it looks a little jumpy, but here's a general idea of what it looks like:

Time to do something worthwhile with it.

Photo du Jour: Day 131

My friend Mike visited this weekend and I promised he would make an appearance on Photo du Jour. He appears here on the Staten Island Ferry.

Photo du Jour: Day 130

Park Ranger Alberto Correa at Ft. Totten in Queens:

The place looked vaguely familiar, probably due to its appearance in the video for "Run This Town":

My other assignment today was to accompany a reporter as she interviewed the family of Yu Yao, the Chinese student who was fatally beaten and raped in Queens last week. The victim's mother, uncle, cousin and cousin's arrived in the U.S. this week to claim her body. After the interview, the family looked at a binder of news clippings about the attack from New York's Chinese-language papers.

My primary task at the interview was to photocopy a portrait of the victim provided by the family:

Not sure what I'm looking at here. A flying goldfish with a sword?

Photo du Jour: Day 126

I've had lamer ideas, though none come to mind at the moment.

Photo du Jour: Day 115

"I have often asked myself whether those days on which we are forced to be indolent are not just the ones we pass in profoundest activity? Whether all our doing, when it comes later, is not only the last reverberation of a great movement which takes place in us on those days of inaction." - Rilke

Here's the product of yesterday's indolence:

Still waiting for that great movement...

"Not a drop of rain touched his glossy form, and he was off, smoothly, immaculately, into the swarm of red taillights heading down Park Avenue."

Photo du Jour: Day 112

Fourteen months in this place and this - a painting of bananas by Mythili - is the extent of my decoration:

P.S. Apologies if the photo subjects become more autobiographical and, therefore, more banal. With the new desk job, I'm struggling to carve out photo time.

I'm always looking for discreet ways to make portraits of people. Nothing's more discreet than photographing a video feed of someone from 200 feet away.
