Photo du Jour: Day 199
The door swung in on a denseness of purpose, eight or nine losers lined up on their barstools, the smell of cut lime and the sunshine of rum, a straight shot of Lysol from the toilet in back. - From "The Lie," by T.C. Boyle.

Photo du Jour: Day 195
I arrived in the lobby of the Standard Hotel just about the time Mythili's cousin went for an impromptu swim in its rooftop pool (located, not coincidentally, next to its rooftop bar). The doorman told me they were no longer letting people in, so I called Mythili to come downstairs and use her powers of feminine persuasion. The doorman was unmoved. And he added that Mythili wasn't allowed back inside either. This was unfortunate, not least of all because Mythili had become the temporary guardian of her cousin's shoes, which she likely wanted back when she left the pool.
Here's a picture of the shoes, taken while Mythili and I waited in the lobby.
