Wedding Season

Here's another wedding that I wouldn't have minded photographing, although I was happier attending it as a guest. Mythili's college friends Dawn and Jim got married at a summer camp in New Castle, VA, over the weekend, and it was a good time through and through. I wish I got pictures of the homemade slip 'n' slide, but I was too busy slipping 'n' sliding.

Memorials

Last weekend my grandfather received an all-expenses-paid trip to D.C. courtesy of the Honor Flight Network, an organization that sends World War II veterans from around the country to visit the World War II memorial, among others.

We also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery:

Before I arrived in D.C. I stopped in Baltimore, where my friends showed me the former Blacks-only pool at Druid Hill Park. The pool is now filled with earth, a memorial to segregation.

Overlook Mountain

When in Woodstock last weekend I hiked to the fire tower on top of Overlook Mountain. No relation to the setting of The Shining, but my attempt at a nice landscape photo was nonetheless cursed by the high sun and padlocked cab.

Pravin and Kavita's Wedding

I rarely say this, but I wouldn't have minded being hired to shoot this wedding. Between lighting, setting and decor, there was a potential picture around every corner. Alas, there was also food and an open bar around every corner, and I think you know where my priorities lie. Here are a few photos I managed to take between drinks.

From Saturday night's Sangeet, when the bride's friends performed a dance routine:

Photo du Jour Rehash: Barely Human

Here are some pictures that came dangerously close to becoming still-lifes:

Paradise

For my friend's bachelor party, we took a 3-day cruise from Long Beach, CA, to Ensenada, Mexico, on Carnival "Paradise." For obvious reasons most of the trip went undocumented, but here're a few establishing shots.

Dockworkers tied our ship up in Ensenada:

These folks started the post-bender atonement a little early:

I took this in the first minutes on the ship, the last known photograph of these men's dignity.

Mike wore this robe in the room and out; on the third day he learned that some passengers had started calling him "robe guy."

Still Shooting

Photo du Jour is over, but I'm still lugging the camera around. I've seen this scene every day for the last few weeks but never with kids playing. I got a little help from the Snow Day:

Photo du Jour: Day 365

I've learned a few things in the course of this project. 1) You'll find some great pictures if you carry your camera around every day. 2) You'll find better ones if you go looking for them. After I took the new desk job I pretty much stopped looking for them -- shooting what I could on my way to and from work, or in the few minutes before I went to bed. Believe it or not that gets very boring, and it shows in these photos.

Still, I think this project improved my photography, even if that wasn't always in evidence. I can compose a picture much quicker than I used to; I have a better sense of what to include or exclude from the frame; I'm more attuned to photogenic light and color. But most of all, I reminded myself that making good photographs requires work and time, and I'll have to devote more of both if I intend to make memorable images.

I'm going to take a break for a week or two and think of a new project for 2011. (Photo de semaine?) In the meantime I'll do a little best-of and repost some of my favorites from the last year. To the dozen-odd visitors to this site, thanks for your interest. Knowing that a few people looked at these pictures made me try a little harder than I otherwise would've. Well, maybe not today:
